Hey, I’m Yohanes Edwin — but most people just call me Ed. I’m a software engineer who enjoys solving hard problems, building systems that actually scale, and finding that sweet spot where performance, cost, and maintainability all line up.

I’ve gone from being the guy fixing bugs and keeping the lights on, to leading teams and shaping the architecture behind products used across thousands of stores. Along the way, I’ve scaled an IoT platform from offline deployments to a centralized cloud model, making it possible to support international customers from a single base in Taiwan. Designed the next-gen multi-tenant platform (AURA) to solve the cloud cost explosion problem and lay the foundation for more sustainable growth. Led engineering as CTO of Pekku.com, Southeast Asia’s first instant website builder, where I rebuilt the system to be 4× faster and cut server costs by ~10%.

What I’ve learned is that great engineering isn’t just about writing code — it’s about solving real-world problems under pressure, mentoring others, and making decisions that balance today’s needs with tomorrow’s growth.

Outside of work, I like to travel, hike mountains, and play weekend badminton. It keeps me grounded and reminds me there’s more to life than just code.

I lead the creation of AURA, a next-generation IoT platform that replaces M2COMM’s costly legacy system with a scalable, multi-tenant design. The old model required one application instance per retail store, which made scaling inefficient and drove cloud expenses to unsustainable levels.

I designed AURA’s architecture from the ground up — including database schema, high-availability planning, and end-to-end workflows from coding to deployment. Unlike the old system, AURA consolidates thousands of stores into a single application, laying the foundation for substantial cost savings and long-term scalability.

I remain hands-on with coding while also mentoring engineers in frontend, backend, and DevOps disciplines. My role bridges technical design and business needs: I make key architectural decisions on how AURA should meet customer and stakeholder requirements, ensuring the product evolves in line with real-world use cases.

Currently in proof-of-concept, AURA is already being piloted by major retail chains in Taiwan and preparing for expansion into Southeast Asia. While still early in its rollout, AURA represents a critical evolution in M2COMM’s IoT strategy — combining stronger technical foundations with substantial operational savings and long-term efficiency.

Senior Web Application Engineer / 2018 - March 2025

I scaled M2COMM’s IoT platform from offline deployments to the cloud, enabling global customer support from Taiwan without the need for overseas offices. This shift marked a turning point for the company, transforming how we delivered and supported international clients.

Along the way, I drove key optimizations such as redesigning core processing jobs to boost performance by over 50%, migrating applications from Windows to Linux for greater stability, and introducing MQTT-based architecture to support projects with leading telecom operators. I also resolved critical reliability issues, including database corruption prevention and crash recovery, which significantly improved platform resilience.

Beyond optimization, I delivered major product features and integrations. These included building new data-processing modules for major retail chains in Taiwan, designing an API dispatcher for third-party system integrations, and launching tools such as planogram management, office hours automation, and NFC-based retail features. I also contributed to projects for a large duty-free retailer and a leading electronics manufacturer, while collaborating with teams across Taiwan and abroad — including with partners in France and ComQi in North America.

This cloud transition was one of my most impactful contributions. While it unlocked global reach and efficiency, it also revealed the challenge of escalating cloud expenses at scale — a challenge that later became the driving force behind my leadership of AURA as Technical Manager.

I rebuilt Southeast Asia’s first instant website builder into a faster, more cost-efficient platform — making it 4× faster and cutting server costs by about 10%. As CTO, I guided the technical direction while staying hands-on with development, ensuring strategic decisions were backed by practical execution.

I led the engineering team with a strong focus on code quality and release stability, consistently delivering projects with minimal defects. Beyond the technical side, I collaborated closely with the founders to align product vision with business priorities, scaling the platform to support rapid growth while maintaining reliability.

My role required balancing leadership with coding, bridging strategy and execution to keep the platform efficient, stable, and user-friendly.

I kept the platform stable and evolving, fixing bugs, improving performance, and developing new features in collaboration with product and design teams. My contributions laid the groundwork for the large-scale optimizations that later enabled major performance gains.

By taking ownership of technical challenges and proactively solving problems, I built the trust and capability that led to my promotion into the CTO role. From there, I continued driving both the technical and strategic growth of the company.
